Ophthalmology in Bangalore

What is Ophthalmology?

Ophthalmology is a field of medicine concerned with structure, function and diseases of the eye.  An Ophthalmologist specialises in diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders in addition to evaluating systemic disease that result in eye signs or symptoms. As Ophthalmologists carry out eye operations, they are both surgical as well as medical specialists.

Ophthalmology Versus Optometry

Ophthalmology and Optometry are two separate fields of medicine. They have a lot in common but also have their differences, so should not be confused with each other.

The job of Optometrist includes sight testing and correction of vision. Basically, an Optometrist is a professional and not a medical doctor. Optometry involves doing vision and eye tests, detecting eye anomalies, and prescribing corrective lenses.

Ophthalmology Treatments

Over the years ophthalmology department in India has undergone massive technological advancement such that it can now treat a wide range of eye conditions such as retinal diseases, glaucoma, cataracts and a lots of other vision related anomalies.

The most common treatments of Ophthalmology in India are:

  • LASIK Surgery
  • Vitrectomy
  • Cataract
  • Retinoblastoma
  • Cornea
  • Glaucoma
  • Refractive errors
  • Occuloplasty
  • Cornea
  • IOL
  • Ptosis correction surgery
  • Pediatric Opthalmology
  • Other eye surgery
  • Oculoplasty and Orbit
  • Cornea transplant
  • Pterygium removal surgery
  • Eye muscle surgery
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal surgery
  • Cornea and refractive surgery

Neuro Ophthalmology

Neuro ophthalmology is a field of medicine concerned with optic nerve disorders and neurological disorders.  A number of ophthalmic diseases are associated with neurologic disorders like brain tumours, strokes and multiple sclerosis. These conditions cause visual problems like double vision and blurred vision. Neuro-Ophthalmology includes neurology, neurosurgery, neuro-radiology and ophthalmology.

Treatment for Retinal Diseases and Retinal Detachment

Treatments for ophthalmological disorders in India also include degenerative disorders affecting the retina, a sensory membrane which forms images. When the retina undergoes wear and tear or is detached from the posterior part of the eye, urgent treatment should be done to stop progression.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration occurs when macula, which is the central region of the retina, undergoes wear and tear or when abnormal blood vessels are formed.  Over a period of time, these problems can result in distorted or blurred vision. While macular degeneration is incurable, it can be controlled with low-vision optical devices and laser and surgical treatments depending on the severity of the degeneration.

Macular Holes

A macular hole develops when a small tear forms in the central region of the retina known as macula.  Vitreous fluid can ooze out through the tear resulting in blurred or distorted vision.  Some macular holes are self healing while others need surgical intervention to repair the hole.  Our surgeons will evaluate the condition and offer treatment depending on its severity.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Ophthalmology is also concerned with treating diabetic patients who are at risk of developing retinal diseases. Diabetic retinopathy is a degenerative disease wherein the blood vessels in the retina are damaged, affecting the retina’s functionality to transmit images. This can result in mild blurred vision to complete vision loss.

Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment occurs when the retina dislodges from behind the eye due to damage or a disease.  Symptoms of retinal detachment include sudden flashes of light, hazy vision, black dots in the visual field, or feeling of a curtain falling over the eyes.  This can result in loss of vision and urgent treatment should be sought.

Glaucoma Treatment

Glaucoma is a gradually worsening condition which damages the optic nerve resulting in partial or total vision loss. If ignored, optic nerve deterioration can cause irreparable vision loss. Glaucoma is incurable, however it can be managed medically, surgically or with laser.

YAG laser is used in selective laser trabeculoplasty.  A beam of light is focussed on the canal which drains the fluid from the eye.  Short bursts of light are targeted at the melanin pigment cells in the trabecular meshwork.  SLT does not harm the adjacent tissue because low power energy is used.

Filtration surgery is done when intraocular pressures cannot be lowered by medication or laser treatment.  A flap is created in the outer layers of the eye to improve drainage. Topical or local anaesthesia is used to numb the eyes after which a flap is created surgically.

Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery is a sub-specialty of ophthalmology that deals

with diseases that affect the area around the eye. Oculoplastic surgeons also specialize in

cosmetic surgery of the face and eye area. They perform a wide range of oculoplastic surgical

treatments and procedures, including:

  • Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery to remove excess skin and fat
  • Periocular rejuvenation surgery
  • Reconstruction following Mohs surgery (skin cancer removal)
  • Ectropion surgery (to correct an eyelid rolled out away from the eye)
  • Entropion surgery (to correct an eyelid and lashes rolled in towards the eye)
  • Ptosis repair (to correct a droopy upper eyelid)
  • Eyelid retraction repair (to correct white showing above or below the iris)
  • Eyelid trauma & tumor surgery
  • Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) (tear drainage system reconstruction)
  • Conjunctivo-dacryocystorhinostomy (C-DCR) (tear drainage system reconstruction)
  • Nasolacrimal (tear drainage system) intubation with silicone tubes
  • Punctal and canalicular (tear duct) repair/reconstruction
  • Orbital trauma surgery & tumor removal/biopsy
  • Enucleation/Evisceration (removal of a blind eye)
  • Orbital implants
  • Eye socket reconstruction

Cost of Ophthalmology Surgery

India offers very low cost ophthalmology treatment.  Indian hospitals have sophisticated technology to carry out the most complex of the procedures.  India is emerging as a popular destination for treatment of eye diseases.  Bangalore is fast gaining popularity for treatment of eye diseases as it has the infrastructure and expertise to carry out the most complex of the surgeries at affordable cost.
